How Gut Check works
The idea in 30 seconds
Every sportsbook sets its own prices, and they don't all agree. One book, Pinnacle, is famous for having the most accurate prices in the world: professional bettors bet there, so its prices get corrected fast. You can't bet at Pinnacle from the US, but we can use its prices as the "real" odds and compare every Ohio sportsbook against them.
When a sportsbook pays more than it should for a bet, that's a bet worth taking. It's like buying something on sale: you won't win every time, but over hundreds of bets, always getting the better price is how you come out ahead.
Who's Reality?
Our bot. Reality makes picks by a fixed rule, with no feelings involved, and its whole record is public: every pick is saved before kickoff and none are ever deleted. Your gut makes picks too. Gut Check is where the two get checked against each other.
How to use it
- Open Suggested. Each card says what to bet, where, and what has to happen for it to win.
- Strong picks have the biggest edge. Small edges (under 1%) are research only: in our 2024–25 test they lost to the final line, so they're tracked but never suggested.
- Tap Log this bet, or any price in All games. Choose Practice (no money) or Real money, the sportsbook, and units.
- Results fill in on their own after the game, in My bets.
- Check Reality vs you to see whether following Reality beats your own picks.
What the odds mean
- −115: bet $1.15 to win $1, so a $10 bet wins $8.70. Minus means the favorite.
- +150: a $10 bet wins $15. Plus means the underdog.
- A unit is your standard bet size (2% of your bankroll by default, set in Settings). Records are in units so everyone compares fairly, whatever they bet.
Words you'll see
- Fair chance
- Pinnacle's chance for the bet with the sportsbook's cut removed. We calculate it three standard ways and use the most cautious.
- Break-even
- How often a price needs to win just to break even.
- Expected return (EV)
- What a bet earns on average per unit if Pinnacle's chance is right.
- Price vs final line (CLV)
- Whether you got a better price than where the odds ended up right before kickoff. Over many bets, it's the best early sign of skill, because it has much less luck in it than wins and losses.
- Key numbers
- Games end on exactly 3 or 7 points far more often than other margins, so a half point around them (+3 vs +2.5) is worth a lot. Reality prices those differences.
- Feeling risky
- Up to 2 underdogs a week paying 2x to 4x, only when the price is unusually good. Small stakes; most of them lose.
- Props (beta)
- Player stats bets (yards, catches). Only gaps of 3%+ vs Pinnacle count. Matchup notes are shown for context but never change a pick.
- Baseline
- In slow weeks Reality adds a few near-misses so it always has data. Not recommended; scored separately.
When Reality picks and the odds update
Reality picks each game the morning before it's played, and takes a second look on game-day morning for strong edges only. (We tested picking earlier in the week on 2024–25 data: early “edges” mostly vanished by kickoff.) Between Reality's runs, the site's prices refresh about every 2 hours from late morning to 11pm Eastern (player props every 4 hours, alternate lines once a day). Refreshes never make picks. Runs can start 5–20 minutes late and prices move in between, so always check the price in the sportsbook's app before you bet.
Rules Reality never breaks
- No parlays, and nothing longer than +400: those are where sportsbooks charge the most.
- Flat bet sizes. No "double up after a loss" systems; they can't create an edge.
- Practice first. Real money only once the record shows the method works.
