Everything Gut Check does in plain English, in about five minutes.
1Odds are a price
-110 means you risk $110 to win $100. +150 means you risk $100 to win $150. Every bet has a price, and the same bet costs different amounts at different sportsbooks.
Odds also hide a chance: -110 implies about a 52% chance, +150 about 40%. If the real chance is higher than the price implies, the bet pays more than it should.
2The sportsbook's cut
Add up both sides of a game at -110 and you get about 104.8%, not 100%. That extra ~4.8% is the sportsbook's cut (called the vig or juice). It's why most bettors lose over time even when they pick winners half the time: at -110 you need to win 52.4% just to break even.
3What “fair price” means
Pinnacle is a sportsbook that takes huge bets from professionals and moves its lines fast, so its prices are the most accurate in the world. We remove Pinnacle's cut and call what's left the fair price.
When an Ohio sportsbook pays more than the fair price, that's an edge. That's the only thing Reality looks for. No hunches, no hot streaks, no favorite teams.
4Price vs final line (the number that matters)
Right before kickoff, the line is at its most accurate. If you got a better price than that final line, you made a good bet, win or lose. Over hundreds of bets, people who beat the final line make money; people who don't, don't.
Wins and losses are noisy. A good bettor can lose 10 of 15. That's why we show “price vs final line” next to every record: it shows skill much sooner than the record does.
5Units: bet the same small amount
A unit is your normal bet size, usually 1–2% of the money you've set aside for betting. Big picks are 1 unit; props and parlays smaller. Never chase losses by betting more. Leagues and records here are counted in units, not dollars, so a $5 bettor and a $500 bettor are judged the same way.
6🍰 Parlays are dessert
Single bets are the meal. A parlay ties bets together: all must win. Every leg adds another layer of the sportsbook's cut, so a 4-leg parlay gives up roughly 4× the cut of one bet. The big payout feels like a bargain; it's usually the most expensive thing on the menu.
A small dessert parlay now and then is fine: keep it to a quarter unit, and don't make it dinner. Reality never recommends parlays, even of its own picks. You can still track yours.
7Longshots and “Feeling risky”
Big plus-money bets lose most of the time even when the price is good. That's why Feeling risky caps the odds at +400, picks at most two a week, and uses a quarter unit. It's for fun with a fair price, not a plan.
8Keep it fun
